4 Whiskey Drinks You Probably Haven’t Heard Of

You’ve heard of an Old Fashioned. You’ve heard of a Whiskey Sour. You’ve heard of a Manhattan. Three of the most popular whiskey drinks around…but what about when you want to shake things up a little. (pun intended) Let’s take a look at 4 whiskey drinks that are a lot less known to the crowd:

Suburban

  • 5oz Rye Whiskey
  • .5oz dark rum
  • .5oz port
  • 1 dash of orange bitters
  • 1 dash of Angostura bitters

It seems like a strange mixture when you read the ingredients, but for some reason they work. To enjoy, stir the ingredients well with ice and then strain into a chilled glass.

The Paper Plane

  • .75 oz Bourbon
  • .75 oz Aperol
  • .75oz Amaro Nonino
  • .75oz Fresh lemon juice

The Paper Plane, which gets its name from the then newly released song by M.I.A., “Paper-Planes,” was created by Sam Ross in 2008. It is made by putting equal parts of the ingredients into a shaker with ice followed by shaking and straining the drink into a coupe glass.

The Brain Duster

  • 1 oz rye whiskey
  • 1 oz absinthe
  • 1 oz Italian vermouth
  • 1 dash angostura bitters

Crafted in 1895, this notoriously strong cocktail is known mainly by absinthe enthusiasts, although it contains whiskey as well. Other names for the drink include “The Waldorf” and “The Hearn.” After a few of these, we can understand why they changed the name.

Mint Julep

  • 1 teaspoon powdered sugar
  • 2 oz bourbon whiskey
  • 2 teaspoons water
  • Mint Leaves

Okay, so you’ve more than likely heard of this drink, but we added it to the list anyway because we don’t want anyone to be missing out…and we like horse racing. The Mint Julep is perhaps most well known for being the drink of choice at the Kentucky Derby. Perfect for warm days, the drink is crafted by mixing the mint, sugar, and water into a highball glass and then filling the glass with ice and bourbon and then stirring well until the glass is chilled.

So if you’re looking to order or make something a little different the next time you’re with your friends, try one of these and enjoy!
